Frankincense: A Quintessential Winter Oil

This year, we’ve been working diligently to expand our offering of healing essential oils and artisan perfumes. One recent addition that truly compliments the holiday season and winter months ahead is our frankincense essential oil. Known as the King of essential oils, frankincense has been used in spiritual and medicinal contexts for thousands of years. Its name is derived from the old French words franc, meaning pure, and encens, which means sweet-smelling substance.

Frankincense’s subtly sweet aroma is rounded out with an air of wood and balsamic and has historically been credited for grounding and calming the senses. To make this essential oil of frankincense, oil is steam-distilled from the milky-white resin secreted by the Boswellia trees, which are native of arid regions of central Africa. The vast majority of Frankincense produced today comes from Somalia. It is also harvested in Ethiopia, as well as throughout the southern Arabian Peninsula.

There are quite a few ways to use this festive essential oil. The most basic is to simply breathe in the calming aroma of frankincense when you need to boost your focus, whether at work or for meditation, relaxation, or prayer. You can also rub a few drops of the oil on your feet for grounding and to calm anxiety. In aromatherapy, frankincense oil is diffused through the use of a vaporizer or oil diffusor (which you can find in our Westport, CT store) and is believed to function as a sedative that induces a feeling of mental peace, relaxation, and satisfaction. Its sweet scent can also help relieve anxiety, anger, and stress. Add 10 to 20 drops to a small glass spray bottle of distilled water and you will have a lovely room spray to use throughout your home. When diluted with body nourishing oils such as jojoba or almond, Frankincense oil can help sooth and regenerate dry skin, something so essential during the winter months. Likewise, its healing properties can help existing cells and tissues remain healthy and strong.

You can find this nurturing essential oil on our website or in our store.
