Sore Throat? Try this Natural Remedy Using a Miracle Spice

Looking for a natural remedy to soothe a sore throat?

Here’s one of our favorites: A warm saltwater gargle spiced up with turmeric.

The yellow spice turmeric comes from the rhizome of the curcuma longa herbaceous perennial plant from the Zingiberaceae or ginger family.  The spice’s active ingredient, curcumin, has powerful anti-inflammatory and antiseptic properties and been used as a healing agent in the Indian Ayurvedic medicine system for thousands of years.    There is growing evidence that turmeric helps reduce inflammation in the body and that regular consumption may even help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and various cancers.   Gargling this antiseptic spice with saltwater can reduce irritation in the throat.

How to make the Turmeric and Salt Gargle
You’ll need:
6 oz. warm water
¾ to 1 teaspoons salt
About 1 teaspoon turmeric (You should be able to find turmeric at your supermarket. Another great option is to order online from Penzeys or Kalustyan’s.)

Stir together the ingredients.  Over a sink, gargle and spit out the mixture until the glass is empty.
Next, swish some plain water around in your mouth.
Be sure to wipe your sink clean afterward to prevent staining.
