The Healing Ingredients in Turmeric Ginger

Arogya’s Turmeric Ginger Herbal Tisane

One of our most loved organic herbal tea concoctions, Turmeric Ginger is excellent for its immune system boosting and anti-inflammatory qualities, while promoting strong digestion and circulatory health.

This blend combines the following healing ingredients:

  • Turmeric
  • Ginger
  • Lemongrass
  • Licorice Root

Traditional Benefits of Turmeric

One of the distinguished ingredients in this tea is turmeric, a yellow spice derived from the Zingiberaceae perennial plant of the ginger family.  If you’ve ever seen turmeric in it’s root form, it actually looks very much like ginger but with orangey-yellow flesh.  Considered a “miracle” spice for its exceptional anti-inflammatory qualities, turmeric has been used in the Indian Ayurvedic medicine system for thousands of years.  There is growing evidence that turmeric’s active ingredient curcumin can help prevent Alzheimer’s disease and various cancers.  Additionally, it’s been found to help manage and prevent arthritis.  Though the spice is also used as a natural dye because of its dynamic color, don’t worry – it won’t stain your teeth. In fact, while it might seem counter-intuitive, studies suggest turmeric can actually help whiten your teeth.

Traditional Benefits of Ginger

Another healing ingredient in this tea is ginger, which is the rhizome of the plant Zingiber officinale.  Ginger is well known for its ability to aid digestion and alleviate nausea.  Like turmeric, the spice has anti-inflammatory properties and can help alleviate pain associated with rheumatoid arthritis.  Sipping ginger tea promotes warmth in the upper respiratory tract, which can offer cold and flu relief.

Traditional Benefits of Lemongrass

To round out ginger and turmeric’s warming essence, we’ve blended in a little lemongrass, or Cymbopogon citratus, a tall perennial grass native to India and tropical Asia.  In holistic medicine, lemongrass is used to treat digestive tract spasms, stomachaches, high blood pressure, achy joints, colds, fevers, and exhaustion.  It has a crisp, cooling essence and acts as a mild astringent with antifungal qualities.  Studies suggest it might stave off the growth of some bacteria and yeast.  In fact, lemongrass oil has been used since ancient times as a natural pesticide and preservative.

Traditional Benefits of Licorice

The fourth prominent ingredient in this tea is licorice root. While licorice’s flavor and scent is reminiscent of anise or fennel, it has no botanical relation.  It comes from the root of Glycyrrhiza glabra, which is native to Europe and parts of Asia.  Steeped, the root of the licorice plant can act as a soothing agent and expectorant, making it ideal for reducing phlegm and alleviating other upper-respiratory irritation.  It can definitely soothe a sore throat!
